In reply to Diana @ Thoughts on Papyrus. Thank you for your comment! :) I did like Juliette in the role. I just feel that reading a book we have very individual ideas of what a character is like, even in ways I can't articulate, and I often find that they're not the same on film. Ah yes I have seen the Cider House Rules too (I've not read that book). They are both very good films, but I probably wouldn't re-watch them again.

Great review! I have such fond memories watching it back in the day, and it introduced me to composition Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt. I haven’t actually realised till now it was directed by Lasse Hallström, but it has the same “dreamy” quality as The Cider House Rules (1999), another of his creation. I wonder how you imagined Vianne. Juliette Binoche is a tremendous actress and the role suits her so well, for the film – that is to say.

The book is set in the early 1980s, if I recall correctly, and that is why it didn’t work as well for me as the film. The film does have a touch of the magical stuff, but most of it is explained by the chemical compound of chocolate, which some say can be an aphrodisiac, but it certainly can lift your mood!

In reply to stargazer. I've not looked too deeply into the ideas, I just enjoy them! The first movie is of course the best. I do like the others a lot, but I understand why they're not as popular.

The Matrix is epic! The action is great (of course), but the philosophical ideas are actually quite profound. I remember we discussed it in a class about metaphysics. The following movies didn’t live up to the first in my opinion.
