An insightful contrast between book and film, observant on detail and speculation as to why such changes from literature to the screen are made.
Your suggestion in the concluding paragraph as to how the patchiness of the memoir reflects the author's state of mind, especially upon reflection of her own first-hand experience of 'being inside', is especially pertinent. I consider your reference to the influence of 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' (a favourite of mine) and, by extension, the author's own observations of institutionalised living, alongside the effects of a regimen of psychotropic medication, of which he observed and partook. Interesting to note the gender contrast as well, with Kaysen's female focus as a counterpoint to the male interactions, aside from Nurse Ratched, in Kesey's account.
As somebody who has been steadily compiling my own writings from my time under psychiatric observation, this article is a useful gateway into further analysis upon the theme of first-hand experience of acute mental health illness, recovery and reflection.
As a disclaimer, I have neither read the book nor watched the film, aside from reading summaries of both, but the subject matter and insight to be gleaned from tackling and even understanding this, does encourage me to read and watch.
