In reply to yvonnembee. Thanks! Yes I think we share some similarities in reading taste. I actually love the HP books, but perhaps if I had come to them as an adult I might not have been so obsessed. They are not perfect reads but I can see the reasons why they are bestsellers, unlike some others I've read!

I do enjoy seeing your posts about books you have red, and often find myself adding titles to my own list. I have a wide reading range and I think this helps me work out in m y own mind what makes a good book for me. Over the years I have learnt what appeals and it is not necessarily a book that is on the number 1 spot, or that has sold millions of copies. Prime example is the Harry Potter series, I have never read them.

Best seller doesn’t always, or perhaps even often, mean that the book is a wonderful read. It looks like often it just means the author is popular. I agree with all of your points. Excellent post!
