Review of ‘Bedtime Adventure Stories for Grown Ups’ by Anna McNuff

An easy to read collection of amusing real-life travel tales from well-known runner and adventurer Anna McNuff. I liked her book The Pants of Perspective which I read several years ago. Her books are ideal reads, both for people who love going on adventures and for armchair travellers. The title of this one, which has its origins in a project during lockdown when adventuring was very limited, is perhaps misleading; there isn’t anything especially suitable for bedtime (I admit I read it at bedtime, but that goes for any book!) and is not a cosy read, describing gruelling races and injuries in addition to beautiful scenery and the kindness of strangers. It also mentions ‘wees’ quite often! The author has an inspiring outlook on life and although her stamina may seem superhuman to the average reader, she is very relatable. The travel tales range from close to home (London, the surrounding counties and Wales) to the Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand. I particularly enjoyed the adventure where her social media followers voted on each place she go to next, and she ended up eating the best Black Forest gateau in the home of a lady in Germany. Some of the adventures seemed like folly, especially the rollerskating one, but as she points out, if everything goes to plan is it really an adventure and what is there to tell? In summary, this was a good read and I will certainly be checking out her other books.
