Review of ‘Karma’ by Boy George

Boy George (aka George Alan O’Dowd) is in his sixties now and has written a new autobiography, with the help of Spencer Bright. It describes Boy George’s turbulent personal life and career. There is quite a lot about recent years, including his time in prison, his experience on the celebrity jungle show and legal troubles with a former member of the band, so it’s currently up to date. The content is both self-reflective, as George considers how he has changed and learnt from his mistakes, and packed with gossip as he lets us in on secrets about who he has fallen out with and what various superstars are like. Some of the things he says about certain people are quite brazen but that helps make it a compelling read. He believes in both astrology and Buddhism, so his opinions are interesting, if not always sensible.

Book cover, showing Boy George in characteristic make-up and hat with colourful background.

The content started to get repetitive towards the end, which felt like filler but was possibly due to careless editing and unfortunately there were many typos. I think the book could have been improved, but it’s a good read all the same.

Did you read a finished copy of the book? Typos in arcs are expected, but I’m surprised if it’s a finished copy. 😮

Yes, it was from the library. It’s actually quite common to find typos in celebrity memoirs, at least the ones I’ve read.
