Review of ‘The Sweet, the Spooky and the Terrifying’ by Rachel Ann Hubert

A collection of three short stories ideal for Halloween, this book wasn’t particularly scary for me (and I do scare easily) but I liked that the stories were all very different. The first story, ‘Alone Together’, was the best one. A lonely college student picks up a stone with a ghost image on it and suddenly he has a new friend, a ghost girl. He ends up going to a party and enjoying himself after all. It matches the ‘sweet’ description. The second story, ‘The Monster Within’, is about a girl who goes to a new town which has strange vibes. I guessed where it was going but it was good anyway. However, it was more gory than spooky! The third story, ‘Ouroboros’, is a body horror tale which is certainly weird, but not terrifying. A man has a strange feeling in his throat which he will not be able to escape. In summary, if you want a short read for Halloween and you like a mixture of vibes, this book fits the bill nicely, even if it’s not really that frightening.
