I last read one of Jacqueline Wilson’s ‘Girls’ books when I was 16, but even by then I was a bit too old for them. There was a time when she was one of my favourite authors, however I’ve never had the urge to revisit her books, as in my opinion they don’t have that timeless appeal of the children’s books we can enjoy as adults. I have to admit that I’ve never wondered what became of Ellie, Magda and Nadine in the ‘Girls’ books but apparently many readers have. I thought this sequel for grown-up fans would be an interesting read. My request for it on NetGalley was rejected, but I then got it from the library.
The book is narrated by Ellie, now a single mum, cat lady and illustrator, whose life changes on her 40th birthday. The story is focused on relationships and family. I did enjoy reading the book, but as the writing style is similar to the ‘Girls’ books, it feels like I read one of these with adult content. I think this was probably the intention. Moreover, it tried hard to be relevant and modern, but somehow felt a bit out of touch. I liked that Ellie’s cat was one of the characters. Someone needs to tell Ellie that the Cats Protection League dropped the ‘League’ from their name in 1998.
