I liked this fast-paced supernatural novel, which is set in the city of St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. The sense of place is one of the strongest elements of the book.
The story is told by college student Dara, a half-blood witch whose father, the head of a powerful clan, banned her from learning to use magic. When the brother of Dara’s best friend goes missing, she has to rescue him from the fae. At the same time, there are unsolved murders linked to the rituals of pure-blood witches. Dara gets deeper into danger while discovering her powers.
I feel that the tone of the book is YA, although the characters are in their twenties. This isn’t a problem for me. The writing is sometimes convoluted or confusing and needs a little more editing, although the proofreading is excellent (it’s rare that I read a book without noticing typos). The book is the first in the Witch Kin Chronicles and I’m undecided whether I want to read the next. It takes a lot for me to get into a series!
