A clever, disturbing horror thriller which engages with the ‘final girl’ trope of slasher movies and examines how trauma affects the lives of real-life final girls.
The title of this book refers to a small group of survivors who meet up with a therapist for years, but then the group begins to disintegrate. One by one, they are being targeted by somebody who wants to kill them. Lynnette, the narrator, is trying to work out who it is, while staying alive and avoiding the cops. She trusts no one and won’t let herself get attached. What seems like paranoia – elaborate security measures, stashes of cash and weapons, escape routes planned – becomes vital to help her win against her fate as a final girl when her life once again descends into nightmare. We are given hints of what caused her trauma and she tells us half-way through the story. The book is not exactly a pleasant read, but it’s smart and pacy, punctuated with bits of evidence (transcripts, journalism, letters) to reinforce the realism. Although there is violence, it’s not described in gratuitous detail. I haven’t anything critical to say of this book. I’d recommend it if you enjoy thrillers, even if you’re not much of a horror fan. The Final Girl Support Group spans both genres.

One of my blogger friends created a ripple effect with her review of this book. I don’t read horror but added this one. Thanks for confirming that it has an appeal to thriller fans. Great review💜
Thanks! 🙂 I don’t often read horror – in fact I DNFed the author’s previous book as it was too gory for me and slow too – but this one has the pace and twists you expect from a thriller. In some respects it is similar to Riley Sager’s Final Girls – which is a thriller too. Thanks for your comment 🙂
The use of evidence is a trope I like–sounds like a good one, if out of my comfort zone. Fantastic review, thanks!
It definitely gave the book a more sophisticated perspective. I wouldn’t describe it as in my comfort zone either but then there is nothing comfortable at all in the book, it is not for the faint-hearted!
I love horror films so when I heard of this book I knew that I was interested. I’ve been so nervous that it might not be good but now I’m just more excited about it!
I’m not even much of a horror fan but I still liked it! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Thanks for your comment 🙂
I’ve been wanting to read this! Thank you for your review!
You’re welcome Jee – I will look forward to your thoughts if/when you read the book!
