A real oddity, this book. I bought it for a few pence from my school library’s book sale a long time ago because the title appealed to me. I remember there were clearly some adult themes and possibly I was a bit too young for it, which begs the question of why it was in the library in the first place. Anyway, I was disappointed by the book I think, although the concept of a substance that ate plastic (and therefore plunged civilisation into chaos) was intriguing. The authors wrote scripts for Doctor Who and created the Doomwatch TV series. This novel, published in 1971, was adapted from the latter. I expect the book is quite rare now and I wonder where my old copy ended up.
