5 years of ‘film of the book’ posts!

Can you believe I’ve been obsessively comparing books and films for 5 years?! It all began with Brooklyn. I wasn’t sure how long the series of posts would last, but I’ve managed to do a post every month since then, with no sign of letting up! Currently I have compared 60 films to their original books. Here are some highlights:

The most viewed ‘film of the book’ posts: Jane Eyre (2011), The Railway Children (1970), Thumbelina (1994)

Closest adaptations to the books: A Monster Calls (2016), The Fault in Our Stars (2014), To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

Films that are better than the books: Mary Poppins (1964), Never Let Me Go (2010), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Best films that are different to the books: The Shining (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Some favourite film adaptations: Dune (2021), Little Women (1994), Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Mixed-bag adaptations: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Lost City of Z (2016)

Worst film adaptations: Persuasion (2022), Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Weirdest film adaptations: The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Adaptation (2002), Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
