The time-travelling bookworm: ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Brontë

I’ve never been a fan of Wuthering Heights. I’ve read it a few times, however, the last of these being in 2007 as an introductory text for my literature degree. I find the story and characters to be unappealing and cruel. It’s powerful, atmospheric and an amazing achievement for ‘Ellis Bell’ (her pseudonym upon publication), so I’ll say I appreciate the importance of this classic but I don’t like the experience of reading it. I’m 99% certain I will never re-read it again.

      I don’t blame you 🙂 it’s not a classic for everyone.

Totally agree with you I dnf’d it earlier this year having tried the audiobook and graphic novel. Too dramatic for me and nasty characters!

I’m glad it’s not just me who doesn’t like it… Yes the characters are unpleasant. I think it’s one of those books that teenagers get into and find that it agrees with their angst, however if you try the book later in life then it seems very over the top.

Aha that makes so much sense!

This is one that I still need to read and discover for myself. Like many classics, it’ll probably hit or miss hahah

Well there’s no harm trying it 🙂 Kind of a ‘Marmite’ book I think.

I’m sure I read it many years ago, and I don’t recall it as being a great experience either. So… I watch the movies instead!

Screen adaptations, when done well, are often a better experience than reading the book 😉

I have never been tempted by this one. I know it’s amongst the great classics, but there are so many other classics, I’d rather read.

It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. It’s not on my bookshelf any more, so I was very certain, when I got rid of it, that I never wanted to re-read!

I’ve never read it before, you’ve made me a bit nervous of trying it, lol

Some people absolutely adore it. I expect that they first read it as angsty teenagers.
